Laryssa Biesenthal

Canadian rower

Laryssa Biesenthal, born 22 June 1971, in Walkerton, Ontario is a Canadian Olympic rower. Biesenthal, who was inducted in the University of British Columbia hall of fame in 2014, first started rowing as a student at the university in 1990. In 1995, she attended her first World Championship, winning a silver medal in the Quadruple Sculls event, with team members Kathleen Heddle, Marnie McBean and Diane O’Grady. This same quartet won bronze in 1996 Summer Olympics. With a variety of teammates, Biensenthal went on to win a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships, a silver and bronze medal in the 1998 edition, and another bronze in the 1999 Championships. Biensenthal won two more medals before retiring, gold in the 1999 Pan American Games, and finally bronze in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. After her retirement from compe*ive rowing, she worked as a coach for the Canadian national team prior to the 2004 Summer Games.
