Life

She was born in 1934, the daughter of farm workers from East Brandenburg. She was trained at the Academy for Performing Arts in Berlin before joining the Berliner Ensemble in 1953. In 1954 she married Hans Oliva-Hagen and they had a child named Catherine (aka Nina Hagen). Her film career led to her being called the "Brigitte Bardot of the GDR".

Despite becoming a successful film actress she was side lined because of her relationship with Wolf Biermann. He was a singer and songwriter but his politics led to him not being employed. In 1976 her support for the now estranged Biermann led to her being sacked. She moved to West Germany in 1977. She is the mother of Nina Hagen and the grandmother of Cosma Shiva Hagen.
