Jon Robert Cart

Jon Robert Cart (born 1964) is an American flutist, piccoloist, and pedagogue. He is professor of flute at Montclair State University’s John J. Cali School of Music. He holds the position of piccoloist with the Landsdowne Symphony Orchestra. He received a Bachelor of Music from DePauw University, Master of Music from Indiana University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland Coillege Park. His primary teachers were Francis Fuge and James Pellerite. Cart is a Verne Q. Powell Flute Artist.

Early life

Cart was born to Alta and Richard Cart and was raised in Deputy, Indiana. He began studying piano at the age of five with Thelma Henry. By the age of 14, he had begun playing the flute and studied with Francis Fuge of the Louisville Orchestra. While a student at DePauw University, he began performing with orchestras, including the Terre Haute Symphony and the Greencastle Chamber Orchestra.

Studies

After completing his studies, Cart went on to perform with Raymond Leppard and David Zinman. He has also performed at international festivals, including Tanglewood, Wolf Trap, the Ravello Festival in Italy, and the Aldeburgh Festival in England. He has given world premiers of several works written for him by Jennifer Higdon, Gary Schocker, Patrick Burns, Amy Reich, and Roger Hudson.

Professional work

He accepted his first teaching appointment at Shippensburg University before being appointed Dean of the College of Performing Arts at Rowan University in 2006. From 2011-2018, he served as Director of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University until he was asked to step down and become a Professor of Flute. He is active as a teacher and clinician in the US. He is the founder of the Montclair Wind Quintet, which performs throughout the Mid-Atlantic region of the US.

He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Ethical Society of Philadelphia, and the Philips Collection.
