Two lovers named Krish Malhotra and Ananya Swaminathan are from culturally opposing backgrounds and are put in a conflicting situation because of it. Along with society, their parents also differ on their relationship, forcing them to decide if their love for each other is more important than the love of their parents. This film is based on Chetan Bhagat's real life story.

The film was written and directed by Abhishek Varman. Prior to Arjun Kapoor being cast for the lead role, actor Shahrukh Khan was initially supposed to star as Krish.
